Former Milwaukee Bucks forward Jae Crowder suggested on Wednesday that the team’s struggles began with the hiring of Doc Rivers. Crowder tweeted in response to Adrian Wojnarowski’s report on last year’s coaching change: “WE WERE 30-13 BTW. TO BRING IN DOC. THIS IS WHAT STARTED THE AVALANCHE.”

The Bucks fired Adrian Griffin on January 23, 2024, despite a 30-13 record, second-best in the NBA at the time. Griffin’s dismissal followed internal friction, defensive struggles, and tensions with stars Giannis Antetokounmpo and Damian Lillard.

Less than a day later, Milwaukee announced Doc Rivers as the new head coach. Rivers, a 24-season veteran and 2008 NBA champion with Boston, was expected to provide leadership for the title-contending roster.

While Rivers brought extensive experience, his recent playoff record, including blown series leads, raised questions about his ability to deliver in high-stakes moments. The front office believed a proven coach could maximize the potential of Milwaukee’s roster.

Since Rivers’ arrival, the Bucks have experienced consecutive early playoff exits. In 2023-24, the team lost in the first round to the Indiana Pacers 4-2 after finishing 49-33. The following season, they again fell in the opening round to the Pacers 4-1, ending with a 48-34 record.

This season, the Bucks sit 12th in the Eastern Conference at 18-27, led by Giannis Antetokounmpo, who averages 28.0 points, 10.0 rebounds, and 5.6 assists. Kevin Porter Jr. and Ryan Rollins are contributing 16.8 and 16.3 points per game, respectively, but the team continues to struggle with consistency on both ends.

Antetokounmpo has broadened the list of teams he would consider in a trade, signaling potential movement after previously focusing solely on the New York Knicks. Milwaukee has begun engaging with multiple franchises, opening the possibility that the 31-year-old could leave the team that drafted him in 2013.

The Bucks face a critical decision regarding their long-term direction. Balancing a potential rebuild with keeping Giannis’ championship window open will determine whether Rivers remains at the helm or if further changes are on the horizon.
