Giannis Antetokounmpo’s latest calf injury is expected to sideline him for four to six weeks, a setback that could effectively end the Bucks’ hopes of even reaching the Eastern Conference play-in.
At the same time, the injury may create an unexpected long-term opportunity for Milwaukee to reshape its future and potentially convince Antetokounmpo to remain with the franchise.
With the current roster no longer positioned to contend, the Bucks could pivot toward the lottery to improve their draft position.
While Milwaukee doesn’t fully control its first-round pick, it will receive the lesser of its own selection and New Orleans’ pick.
Given the Pelicans’ projected lottery position, the Bucks could still land a high selection in what’s considered a deep draft class.
That pick could be used to add a young cornerstone alongside Antetokounmpo or packaged in a trade for an established star.
“They are coming up against it in Milwaukee,” Brian Windhorst said on First Take. “But this actually, when you talk to folks around the league, may have opened a window for the Bucks to keep Giannis.”
Windhorst explained that the team was already struggling even with Antetokounmpo in the lineup and now has a clear incentive to consider a tank, which could position the franchise for a top pick and greater trade flexibility this summer.
Windhorst added that if the Bucks wait until July, they could trade up to three first-round picks and return to Antetokounmpo with a renewed plan.
“This actually opens a way that they can offer another pathway to Giannis to try to improve the team,” he said, noting that the lack of a firm timetable on Antetokounmpo’s return leaves Milwaukee’s options open.
