FC Barcelona has confirmed its commitment to the EuroLeague, signing a new 10-year license, according to journalist Aris Barkas. The formal decision by the club board is expected to finalize the process by the end of January.
The Catalan club’s move signals that it will remain in Europe’s top-tier competition despite ongoing NBA discussions about launching a continental league. Barcelona has been a target for the proposed NBA Europe venture, which aims to introduce permanent franchises across the continent.
Barcelona currently sits fourth in the 2025-26 EuroLeague standings with a 14-7 record, posting a +60 point differential and winning seven of its last ten games. The club has maintained consistency at home (8-3) and on the road (6-4), reinforcing its position as a European powerhouse.
The NBA is preparing to pitch investors on a new European league, with commissioner Adam Silver attending regular-season games in London and Berlin this week between the Memphis Grizzlies and Orlando Magic. These cities are seen as potential future franchise locations.
Silver highlighted Europe’s market potential, noting that basketball ranks as the continent’s second-most popular sport after soccer, with roughly 300 million fans. Around 15% of current NBA players are European, emphasizing the region’s role in the league’s talent pipeline.
The proposed NBA Europe league would feature permanent franchises while offering merit-based access for clubs through the Basketball Champions League or postseason tournaments. This structure aims to balance European sports traditions with the new professional model.
Financial interest in the project is strong, with Abu Dhabi and Qatari investors exploring franchises, including potential teams in Manchester and Paris. Franchise valuations are projected between $500 million and $1 billion, and the NBA plans a private conference in London this month to engage sponsors, media partners, and investors.
Barcelona’s decision to stay in the EuroLeague reflects the strength and stability of Europe’s premier basketball competition. The club’s continued participation ensures that the EuroLeague retains one of its flagship teams while the NBA explores new expansion opportunities.
