Deni Avdija dropped a season-high 41 points to lead the Portland Trail Blazers to a 103-102 victory over the Houston Rockets on Wednesday night at Moda Center.
Kevin Durant scored 37 points, including a late jumper and free throws, but the Rockets fell short as a potential buzzer-beater tip-in by Tari Eason was ruled too late after review.
Portland built an early lead behind Yang Hansen’s long 3-pointer and a strong first-half finish, closing the second quarter on a 17-7 run to hold a 57-47 advantage at halftime.
Avdija’s acrobatic 19-foot layup at the end of the third quarter gave Portland an 81-75 lead heading into the final period. Shaedon Sharpe and Caleb Love also contributed, helping the Blazers maintain their edge despite Houston’s late rally.
Durant kept Houston in the game, connecting on jumpers and free throws to bring the Rockets within striking distance, including a 101-99 score with just over a minute remaining. Avdija responded with a layup to extend Portland’s lead.
The Blazers sealed the game when Houston was called for a loose-ball foul on the final inbound, preserving Portland’s fourth straight win and moving their record to 18-20.
Houston played without Alperen Sengun due to a sprained ankle, limiting their frontcourt options. Amen Thompson added 24 points, and Tari Eason had 15, but turnovers and missed late opportunities hurt the Rockets.
Portland’s defense forced key stops down the stretch, holding Houston to 37 percent shooting and 20-29 from the free-throw line. Avdija’s 13-of-15 free throws were critical in the win.
The teams will meet again at Moda Center on Friday, giving the Blazers a chance to extend their winning streak and the Rockets an opportunity for redemption.
