Former NBA center Brendan Haywood shared a striking story about Michael Jordan on his Finding the Seams podcast with Ric Bucher, highlighting the difference between past and current approaches to load management.

Haywood recounted watching Jordan, then 40, play through serious knee issues, including undergoing MCL surgery and ongoing swelling. “Man, I was in the training room and they were draining like this disgusting stuff out of his knee just for him to be able to play,” he said, via HoopsHype.

The procedure involved draining fluid from Jordan’s knee every couple of games, a process that left Haywood, who is afraid of needles, both horrified and impressed. The experience underscored the physical toll Jordan endured late in his career to remain on the court.

When Haywood asked Jordan why he continued playing despite the pain, the legendary guard responded, “Somebody gave their last dollar to come see me play and bring their kid to the game, and I feel like it’s my duty to give them the Michael Jordan experience.”

Haywood emphasized that Jordan’s approach reflected a commitment to fans that contrasted sharply with modern load management strategies. While contemporary players often rest to preserve their health, Jordan prioritized giving audiences a full, high-level performance regardless of personal risk.
