Tyrese Maxey says Joel Embiid was the first person to truly believe in his potential, a mindset that has driven the 25-year-old guard to elite levels. Speaking to Austin Rivers, Maxey described how he spends hours watching film, analyzing opponents, and refining his game every day.

“I watch everybody play… this is the best thing I ever did,” Maxey said, via HoopsHype. He added that a teammate helps break down his film and the next day’s opponents, including stars like Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Jalen Brunson, and Donovan Mitchell, which has helped him develop a deeper understanding of the game.

Maxey emphasizes the importance of consistent reps and preparation. “I want—when it’s done, I want to say, ‘Look, it’s my body of work.’ I worked extremely hard when nobody was watching me,” he explained, highlighting his rise from a 21st pick averaging eight points per game to now producing at an All-Star level.

The 76ers guard is currently leading Philadelphia with 30.9 points, 7.2 assists, and 4.5 rebounds per game while shooting 39.6% from three. His performance ranks among the NBA’s top scorers this season, reflecting the result of relentless summer work and dedication to maximizing his potential.

Maxey is clear that individual accolades are secondary to winning. “I want to maximize my entire potential… and whatever accolades come from that, you know, at the end I want to win a chip,” he said, expressing a focus on team success and leaving nothing on the table.

He also credited Embiid for his support and guidance. “I got—like why every time I get a chance, I got to give a shout out to Joel ‘cause like he was really the first person to believe in me,” Maxey said.

After a challenging 2024-25 season affected by injuries, Maxey said he worked hard to ensure the team avoids a repeat of past struggles. His leadership on and off the court is shaping the 76ers’ current push in the Eastern Conference, where Philadelphia sits 5th with an 18-14 record.
