Marcus Smart highlighted the importance of experience in tight games after the Lakers rallied past Memphis 128-121. “I definitely think it has something to do with it… with guys like LeBron, Luka, and myself who’s been in that,” Smart said on their 11-0 record in crunch-time situations.
Acknowledging the challenge of sustaining defensive intensity, Smart stressed effort and urgency. “Everybody’s trying to do it in this league… do everything you can best of your ability. Usually when the effort is there, you get a good result,” he explained.
Smart praised Jaxson Hayes’ impact on both ends of the court. “His ability to control the paint… going to get the ball at the highest point and altering shots allows our defense to pick it up for my guards even more. The urgency he brings is huge for us,” he said.
On the contagious nature of energy, Smart noted, “Energy is contagious whether it’s negative or positive… when urgency is there, it trickles up the line. We have to come out positive and let that flow.”
The guard also acknowledged Jake LaRavia’s contributions. “Just his ability to stay consistent, even when things don’t go his way. We trusted his work… to finally see it happen, it’s big for him and for us,” Smart said.
Regarding his own offensive role, Smart emphasized creation and decision-making. “Just my ability to create for others and for myself… having the ball in my hands is definitely good for this team,” he said, reflecting on his 13-point, seven-assist performance.
Smart also highlighted the defensive synergy with LaRavia. “Me and Jake coming from Memphis together… he’s a really good defender, and we have to feed his confidence. We’re gifted offensively, so we balance that out with energy on defense,” he said.
The Lakers overcame a 15-point deficit in the second quarter, with Luka Doncic scoring 34 points and LeBron James adding 31. Los Angeles shot 58% from the floor and 87% from the free-throw line, while securing 42 rebounds and 20 assists.
Memphis, missing six players including Zach Edey, saw six members reach double figures, led by Jaren Jackson Jr.’s 25 points. The Grizzlies fell to 15-19 and remain under .500 on the road, with the teams set to meet again on Sunday in Los Angeles.
