Erik Spoelstra highlighted Miami’s defensive effort as key in their 118-112 win over Detroit. “There were some great defensive possessions…tough rebounds,” he said, emphasizing the team’s commitment to controlling the paint and limiting second-chance opportunities.
The Heat coach also credited his players’ clutch execution late in the game. “Jaime really settled in…he just got to a spot that he was very comfortable with, and he put it away,” Spoelstra said of Jaime Jaquez Jr.’s late jumper that helped seal the win.
Spoelstra praised the impact of Bam Adebayo and Kel’el Ware on the boards. “Bam and Kel’el were just terrific and physical on the glass…we were able to get some second opportunities,” he explained, noting Miami’s success against a Pistons team that usually dominates the offensive glass.
Consistency out of halftime has been a focus for the Heat this season, and Spoelstra acknowledged improvement. “We had enough games where we were a dud out of it…our guys have taken that to heart to try to be more consistent throughout the course of the game,” he said.
Norman Powell’s 36-point performance drew attention, particularly in pick-and-roll situations. “What really was impressive…he was getting so many of his points in random situations…catch and goes, offensive rebounds, relocations,” Spoelstra said, praising Powell’s ability to read the defense and create scoring opportunities.
Miami’s physicality and control on the glass were critical against a Pistons team that scored almost 80 points in the paint in their previous outing. “We knew we’d have to bring a physical edge…there was great intention,” Spoelstra noted, pointing to defensive rebounds and body control as a determining factor.
The Heat’s strategy combined transition opportunities with half-court patience. “Sometimes you just need to get some of those possessions in the mud…and we were able to get some second opportunities,” he said, highlighting the team’s adaptability against Detroit’s defensive schemes.
Miami now extends its winning streak to four games, with Powell leading the way alongside Jaquez’s 19 points and Andrew Wiggins’ 17. Cade Cunningham’s 31 points and 11 assists were not enough for Detroit, as the Heat controlled rebounds and key possessions down the stretch.
The Heat will host Minnesota on Saturday, while the Pistons visit Cleveland on Sunday.
