Denver Nuggets center Jonas Valanciunas was forced to leave Wednesday night’s win over the Toronto Raptors earlier than expected after suffering a calf injury.
The issue surfaced late in the third quarter, when Valanciunas felt what he described as a sudden “pop” in his right calf, immediately raising concern on the bench and among the medical staff.
The veteran big man had been inserted into the starting lineup while Nikola Jokic continues to recover from a knee hyperextension that is expected to sideline him for at least four weeks.
In that expanded role, Valanciunas delivered a strong all-around performance, finishing with 17 points, nine rebounds, four assists, and three blocks in just 23 minutes of action.
His presence gave Denver stability inside, and his production reflected a player who was clearly “finding his rhythm” before the injury abruptly halted his night.
Once Valanciunas exited, the Nuggets were forced to improvise. Head coach David Adelman leaned into smaller, more flexible lineups, rotating through players such as Peyton Watson, Spencer Jones, and second-year rookie DaRon Holmes II.
The approach was less about traditional size and more about energy, movement, and adaptability – a clear case of “making do with what’s available.”
After the game, Adelman confirmed that Valanciunas left the arena wearing a walking boot, though he was able to move under his own power.
