Rookie Kon Knueppel returned from a one-game absence due to an ankle sprain and contributed 20 points as the Charlotte Hornets fell 132-125 to the Golden State Warriors on Wednesday. “Honestly, I didn’t really notice [the ankle] out there at all. We got to a real nice spot, and I felt good playing today,” Knueppel said about his quick recovery.
Knueppel praised teammate Brandon Miller’s recent play. “Brandon’s been great. He’s at his best when he’s aggressive, making plays with shots or passes. The last couple games, it’s been more with his scoring ability, but he’s a willing passer too,” he said.
The Hornets rookie also discussed his comfort shooting off the dribble. “Coming in, my one-dribble threes weren’t great, so it was a point of emphasis in the offseason. I feel like I’m in a really good spot now, though I missed a couple tonight,” Knueppel explained.
Playing in front of his family added a special element for Knueppel. “It was awesome. My parents and brothers were all here. One of my brothers chickened out from wearing the full uniform, but it was good to have them,” he said.
Looking back on his growth over the past year, Knueppel noted, “I feel like I’ve gotten miles better, especially with understanding the NBA game. It’s been another successful year of getting better each day on and off the court.”
He reflected on the fourth-quarter loss and key moments. “We talked about finishing some possessions. Draymond got a big tip-in and a big three at the end. If we get that offensive or defensive rebound, I feel like we’re in a good spot. They shot really well, and Curry opens things up for other guys,” he said.
Knueppel also shared thoughts on new teammate PJ Hall. “He’s just a smart player, competes at a high level, picked up the playbook right away, and brings high energy. That gets you on the floor and successful when you’re out there,” he said.
Sharing the court with former summer league teammates was a highlight. “I didn’t really notice at the time, but it was cool to play with those guys again,” Knueppel said.
Finally, Knueppel reflected on facing Stephen Curry. “We tried as hard as we could to take away his catches and threes, and he still got 10 up. It shows how impactful of a player he is, and to still win the game, it’s just a really special player,” he said.
