Charlotte Hornets head coach Charles Lee acknowledged the challenges of facing the Golden State Warriors while praising his team’s effort in Wednesday’s 132-125 loss. “I am really happy with the group because I think when you play a team like the Warriors and a player like Curry, they force you to do different things. We took our defense to another level,” Lee said.
Lee highlighted the team’s defensive adjustments and collective effort. “The guys really competed within it. Togetherness of the group was really good to try to cover for each other all night and get the ball out of Curry’s hands. A couple of possessions, we could have finished better with a rebound or defended without fouling, allowing Butler 12 free throws,” he added.
The Hornets responded well to Golden State’s runs, according to Lee. “Our group responded well, took some punches, and rallied. We had great pace and 35 assists, which shows the ball was moving. But turnovers in pivotal moments allowed them to creep back into the game. We have to continue to take care of the ball,” he said.
Lee also addressed the team’s offensive rebound success. “It’s part of our identity to be relentless offensive rebounders. Moussa has played a lot more, and the guards have chipped in too. Brandon has committed more, Kon got in the mix, Melo had a putback tonight. It’s been really helpful for our offense,” he explained.
Regarding player development, Lee noted the flexibility with playing time. “I always have an open mind. We do what’s best for the team. Moussa will play whatever role we need to be successful. That could be starts, minutes, anything,” he said.
Lee praised his players’ effort defending Curry, especially Sion James. “Sion was one of the primary defenders. I loved his physicality and his understanding of navigating screens. His mindset to refuse being screened and stay locked on Curry is important,” Lee said.
He also credited others who guarded Curry throughout the game. “Collin brought physicality, face-guarded him, and made others make plays. Brandon and Josh also took turns. Collectively, the team tried to wear Curry down back-to-back,” Lee added.
Despite the loss, Lee emphasized the team’s resilience. “Offensively, we did a great job adjusting to their different coverages. Defensively, a couple pivotal moments decided the game, but overall, I’m proud of how our guys competed,” he concluded.
