Jonathan Kuminga’s future with the Golden State Warriors has become increasingly uncertain as league executives monitor a growing disconnect between the young forward and head coach Steve Kerr.
NBA insider Chris Haynes reported Friday that rival teams expect Kuminga to be available once January 15 arrives, the date when he becomes trade-eligible after signing a two-year, $48.5 million extension on September 30. According to Haynes, multiple teams believe Kuminga will not remain with the Warriors past the trade deadline.
Haynes added that Kuminga has been “very frustrated” this season and has held numerous meetings with Kerr, though the two have not found alignment. Those conversations have yet to translate into a defined or consistent role within Golden State’s rotation.
The tension comes during a pivotal season for the Warriors, who sit at 16-15 and eighth in the Western Conference. Golden State remains in the playoff mix, but the margin for error is thin in a tightly packed conference.
Kuminga, 23, is averaging 11.8 points, 6.2 rebounds, and 2.6 assists in 24.8 minutes per game across 18 appearances. His athleticism and physical profile remain clear assets, yet his usage has fluctuated within a veteran-heavy lineup.
Golden State’s offense continues to revolve around Stephen Curry, who leads the team with 28.7 points per game, while Jimmy Butler adds 19.9 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 4.7 assists. The presence of established veterans has limited developmental opportunities for younger players.
Draymond Green’s playmaking role and defensive responsibilities also influence frontcourt minutes, further complicating Kuminga’s path to a larger workload. Moses Moody and Brandin Podziemski have also carved out steadier roles within Kerr’s system.
The frustration is notable given the Warriors’ offseason. Kuminga’s prolonged restricted free agency delayed roster flexibility and prevented Golden State from pursuing other moves until his extension was finalized.
As January 15 approaches, league attention will intensify. Whether the Warriors can repair the relationship or pivot toward a trade may shape both their short-term competitiveness and long-term direction.
