Houston Rockets head coach Ime Udoka highlighted the team’s disciplined defense and offensive ball movement following a 119-96 Christmas Day victory over the Los Angeles Lakers. “We had some favorable matchups that we liked,” Udoka said. “Nobody forced anything. Got to their spots. Their spacing was good and guys were aggressive outside of the blitzes tonight.”
Udoka emphasized the importance of ball movement after recent struggles against the Clippers. “We were too stagnant in a lot of these games,” he said. “Our assist numbers were great after the first quarter, turnovers are low, and nobody was forcing it. We’re really sharing it.”
Amen Thompson’s defensive effort drew particular praise from Udoka. “He did a great job on Reaves to start and on Doncic when he was on him,” he said. “We were much more disciplined than the other night when we put Harden on the line 15 times.”
Tari Eason also earned recognition for his energy and defensive activity. “He was all over the place doing what he usually does,” Udoka said. “Doncic had four turnovers early and we had four steals off of those. Activity was great.”
Udoka noted that Houston’s size and depth were key factors in the victory. “It adds to the versatility and lineups we can throw out there,” he said. “Whether they start or back up, we expect that from those guys, and we kind of came in layers tonight.”
Rising guard Reed Sheppard impressed with his ability to manage the second unit. “It’s been a great season of growth for him,” Udoka said. “He gives us a little of what we lost with Fred. A guy that can walk into those threes or get his pull-up going.”
The Rockets coach also addressed developing younger players and positional flexibility. “We script quite a bit and put guys in different spots,” he said. “They need to know all the plays in all the spots and guys are getting better as we go.”
Despite the Christmas win, Udoka indicated the team will continue experimenting with lineups. “We’ll keep it moving and see what we have when we’re fully whole,” he said. “A lot of good problems to solve and a lot of good bodies to throw out there.”
Udoka reflected on the national stage and the team’s performance. “We had a solid start, disruptive on the defensive end, scoring at a high level,” he said. “Solid job all around. Defense has been top-fiveish all year, and offensively we cleaned up some things tonight.”
Veteran presence also factored into the Rockets’ success. “Just a vet guy, experienced, knows what he’s doing out there,” Udoka said. “He brings top-tier communication and helps grow our young guys in that area.”
The Rockets improve to 18-10 and will host Cleveland on Saturday, while the Lakers aim to regroup against the Sacramento Kings on Sunday.
