Lawyers for Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier are asking a federal judge to dismiss the charges against him, according to David Purdum of ESPN. The defense argues that prosecutors went beyond the scope of federal law in bringing the case.

Rozier has pleaded not guilty to two federal counts connected to illegal sports betting and was arraigned in Brooklyn earlier this month alongside associate Deniro Laster.

He was released on a $3 million bond secured by his Florida home, while the NBA placed him on leave following his October 23 arrest.

In court filings, attorney Jim Trusty contends that the wire fraud charge is legally insufficient and fails to clearly describe an actual crime.

He argues that the government is attempting to frame violations of sportsbook rules as criminal conduct, and that if the wire fraud count is dismissed, the related money laundering charge would also fall.

Trusty cited a 2023 decision by the United States Supreme Court outlining the requirements for wire fraud, a standard the defense says prosecutors have not met. The government’s response to the motion is due February 2.
