Memphis Grizzlies head coach Tuomas Iisalo credited his team’s defensive and rebounding effort for their 116–110 road victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves on Wednesday.
“Controlling the possession game, doing a good job there, we were able to force 17 turnovers but also control the boards, and that’s what was needed with the lack of playmakers on the roster,” Iisalo said.
Iisalo highlighted the continued development of Jaren Jackson Jr., who led the Grizzlies with 28 points and 12 rebounds. “Jaren’s been in his spots for a while now, and it was just a matter of time before he got going. Playing with a lot of confidence, the spacing around him and getting him into actions has been better,” Iisalo noted, adding that Jackson handled physical play well.
Regarding his unconventional starting lineup, Iisalo explained, “We wanted to take Gobert a little out of his comfort zone while still preserving lineups that have worked very well in the past with BC and Jaren, and compensate with Santi at the three and spread creation between the three guards.”
On the team’s recent surge, Iisalo said, “It’s natural progress because of how the guys are working on a daily basis. When we had difficulties early in the season, we took a hard look at what we could do better and started locking in. There’s been a lot of instability in terms of roles, and that takes time, but the guys have done a great job.”
Media asked about rookie Cedric Coward’s role in the fourth quarter, and Iisalo responded, “The deep end is the best teacher. Comfort zone is a beautiful place, but nothing ever grows there. He’s expected to contribute no matter if it’s a first-year player or a tenth-year player. With injuries and lineup changes, you just have to step up to the challenge.”
Iisalo emphasized the team’s adaptability: “Whatever role you’re given on a given night, you’re expected to contribute. All the tactical stuff, defensive schemes or offensive X’s and O’s, is there to help us win. That competitive edge has really developed, and the team believes we can win together with whoever we have.”
The Grizzlies have now won four of five games, improving to 13–14, and will host Washington on Saturday.
