Norman Powell revealed he was caught off guard by the Los Angeles Clippers’ handling of his contract extension before being traded to the Miami Heat. On the Ball in the Family podcast, Powell said, via HoopsHype, “I was extremely surprised…they were up for the contract extension, going into the exit meetings and stuff and talking to them like, ‘Oh, we love you, we want you here as a Clipper, we’ll figure out the extension.’”
Powell described the abrupt shift in plans while he was overseas. “I’m on a damn boat trip, doing a tour with my girl, in the middle of the tour—shut the whole thing down,” he said, referring to the Clippers’ decision to move him in a three-team trade on July 7.
Expressing frustration, Powell emphasized the need for clear communication. “You have to tell me that, right? Just keep it business. Don’t tell me you want me here, then you just automatically trade me,” he said.
The veteran guard identified the Clippers’ front office as the target of his motivation. “The anger and s*** goes toward the front office…my job is to go out there and show you that you made a mistake,” Powell said. He added that he no longer draws motivation from competing with other players, recalling his draft-day determination: “I had that when I was first coming into the league…‘Oh, you think 45 people are better than me? All right, cool. I’m gonna go show you.’”
Since joining the Heat, Powell has been a consistent contributor, starting all 21 games this season and averaging 24.4 points, 3.7 rebounds, and 2.5 assists over 30.9 minutes per game.
Miami’s rotation has relied heavily on Powell’s versatility, with the guard filling multiple roles alongside Andrew Wiggins, Tyler Herro, and Bam Adebayo. His shooting efficiency, averaging 45.4% from the field and 29.1% from three-point range, has been vital for the team’s 14-12 start in the 2025-26 season.
Powell’s mindset appears focused on proving his value. “I’m gonna come out and prove to you that, like, y’all shouldn’t have traded me,” he said, highlighting the drive that has defined his career since being drafted 46th overall.
The Heat, seeking playoff positioning in the Eastern Conference, have leaned on Powell’s scoring and experience as they look to build chemistry around their core. His blend of offensive firepower and defensive awareness has made him an immediate impact player in Miami’s system.
