Jarred Vanderbilt highlighted the impact of the Lakers’ bench in Sunday’s 116-114 comeback victory over the Phoenix Suns. He said the group focused on physicality and intensity, which helped shift the momentum in the third quarter.
Vanderbilt described the energy as contagious. “Once somebody starts it, everybody feeds off that energy,” he said, pointing to deflections, steals, and overall hustle as key factors.
After not playing for a month, Vanderbilt said he had built-up energy entering the game. “I bring that every game I play regardless,” he said, emphasizing his readiness and commitment to the team.
The forward also reflected on the emotional swings late in the game. “They made a late run, we made big plays down the stretch, and we didn’t panic,” he said, highlighting the Lakers’ 9-0 record in clutch situations this season.
Vanderbilt credited team preparation in practice for their late-game execution. “We go over late-game situations a lot, so seeing it executed in real time is a testament to the whole group,” he said.
He also praised the defensive versatility of the lineup. “Having multiple defensive-minded players who can guard multiple positions and bring size and energy helped spark that run,” Vanderbilt said.
On staying engaged during his time off the court, Vanderbilt noted, “I know the season is long. Opportunities come back around, so the biggest thing is being ready mentally and showing up on the court.”
Vanderbilt contributed six offensive rebounds, several steals, and a block, helping the Lakers offset a tough shooting night from Luka Doncic. The team finished with a season-high 24 offensive boards.
Los Angeles improved to 18-7 and will face Utah on Thursday, while Phoenix falls to 14-12 before hosting Golden State.
