Orlando Magic head coach Jamahl Mosley expressed concern for Franz Wagner following the team’s 106-100 loss to the New York Knicks on Sunday at Madison Square Garden. Wagner exited early with a lower left leg injury after scoring seven points in seven minutes.

“You never want to see anybody go down… that hurt my heart watching him hit the floor,” Mosley said, adding that the team is hoping for a full recovery. He praised Wagner’s contributions this season, noting his growth on both ends of the floor. “He’s been great… getting downhill, attacking the basket, getting to the free throw line, stepping into a shot with confidence,” Mosley said.

The Magic, who were playing without key players like Banchero until his recent return, struggled to maintain momentum after Wagner’s exit. Mosley emphasized the importance of relying on depth and defense: “Our guys are going to have to step up to the plate, depending on how long guys are out for.”

Despite the setback, Orlando kept the game competitive through halftime, trailing 55-54, thanks to balanced scoring from Desmond Bane and Paolo Banchero. Bane finished with 16 points and six rebounds, while Anthony Black added 14 points and 11 boards off the bench.

Mosley acknowledged the psychological impact of Wagner’s injury on the team. “It took a minute for us to respond… it’s hard to get yourself back in that space,” he said, noting that players eventually refocused and fought until the final buzzer.

The Magic also faced challenges in generating consistent offense. Mosley stressed the importance of shot confidence in a make-or-miss league: “You shoot 28% from the three and 67% from the free throw line… you’ve got to give yourself a chance.” Orlando managed to hold New York below their season average of 120 points, a positive sign for the team’s defensive identity.

Regarding adjustments against a Knicks squad missing Karl-Anthony Towns, Mosley noted, “They ran a lot of the same sets, but some of their stuff was more pick-and-roll heavy… getting Jalen to come back to the basketball.” Brunson scored 30 points and orchestrated New York’s offense with nine assists, helping the Knicks build a decisive lead in the third quarter.

Orlando falls to 14-10 as it prepares for a Tuesday NBA Cup quarterfinal against Miami, with Wagner’s status to be evaluated upon returning home.
