The New York Knicks overcame a strong start from the Orlando Magic to secure a 106-100 victory at Madison Square Garden on Sunday, earning their first win over Orlando this season. Head coach Mike Brown highlighted the team’s defensive adjustments and individual contributions as key factors in the win.

“Orlando is a well-coached team… they play fast, physical, and attack the glass,” Brown said, praising his players for limiting the Magic to just three fast-break points in the third quarter. The Knicks forced turnovers and applied disciplined ball defense, keeping Orlando from gaining momentum despite Franz Wagner’s early exit due to injury.

Brown singled out the Knicks’ big men for their rebounding dominance. “Josh had 12, Mitch had 13, Ariel had seven… 15 offensive rebounds was a big night for us,” he said, emphasizing the importance of controlling the glass against a physically aggressive Magic team.

OG Anunoby’s all-around impact also drew praise. Brown noted, “The versatility that OG gives us is unbelievable… he can guard one through five, attack the rim, and grab seven rebounds while adding three steals.” Anunoby finished with 21 points on 5-of-7 shooting from three-point range, providing a spark that helped New York build a decisive lead in the second half.

Ariel Hukporti impressed with his defensive instincts and athleticism. Brown highlighted his speed and ability to contest plays, including four 50/50 balls and a key block in transition. “He’s strong, quick off the floor, and has a nose for the ball… those are the things that allow him to be impactful so soon in his career,” Brown said.

Jalen Brunson led the offense with 30 points and nine assists, while Josh Hart added 17 points and 12 rebounds, helping New York out-rebound Orlando 52-48. Mikal Bridges contributed 12 points, seven boards, and six assists, filling the void left by Karl-Anthony Towns, who sat out with left calf tightness.

Brown stressed the psychological lift from defeating a well-coached opponent. “It’s big for us… we needed to establish the game in a way that gave ourselves a chance to win,” he said, noting the Knicks’ ability to grind out a win in a physical matchup.

The Knicks outscored Orlando 28-18 in the third quarter and extended the lead early in the fourth, weathering a late push from the Magic. Despite Orlando finishing with 36% shooting and limited three-point success, New York’s defense and rebounding sealed the outcome.

New York improves to 16-7 overall and 13-1 at home, while Orlando drops to 14-10 as the Magic prepare for a Tuesday NBA Cup quarterfinal matchup against Miami.
