Basketball betting is ubiquitous because of the popularity of the sport paired with the variety of betting markets you can use to create lucrative single bets or powerful multiples. Forget the NBA, which every bookmaker boasts about, and step into the world of Irish basketball. More specifically, the Super League is the top-tier league in the nation and features amongst pretty much every bookmaker in Ireland on Scs and is recognised under Basketball Ireland.
Top Basketball Leagues
The Super League was established over 50 years ago, in 1973. Structurally, it is made up of 12 teams which are from the Republic of Ireland, and also one called Belfast Star in Northern Ireland. Next season, there are plans to expand to 14 clubs but the proposal is yet to be confirmed.
Based on their rankings right now, the teams of The Super League are:
- Belfast Star based in Belfast
- Ballincollig based in Cork
- Griffith College Éanna based in Dublin
- UCD Marian based in Belfield
- Garvey’s Tralee Warriors based in Tralee
- Killester based in Dublin
- St Vincent’s based in Dublin
- Flexachem KCYMS based in Killorglin
- EJ Sligo All-Stars based in Sligo
- Limerick Celtics based in Limerick
- Energywise Ireland Neptune based in Cork
- UCC Demons based in Cork
Initially, the competition was named the SuperLeague, although there was a brief period when it was changed to the Premier League. In 2016, the name changed back.
As this league is the highest level in national basketball, there are heavy ties to other major championships. Many of the players are also part of the squad for the Ireland Senior Men’s National Basketball team, a prestigious roster that plays in the FIBA World Cup qualifiers.
Top Teams
From the 12 teams above, some are more accomplished than others. Looking at statistics and league titles alone, Neptune have 11 Irish Men’s National League wins under their belt, most recently in 2003. They also have 5 Irish Men’s National Cup triumphs, last in 2013. Out of all the teams, they are the only ones to possess their own stadium, probably because they are the oldest and most renowned club, founded in 1947 in Cork. Their head coach is Pat Price.
Last year, the UCC Demons were the winners of the 2024/25 season. The UCC Demons also hold the record for most National Cup titles, winning 8 years including in 2024. Furthermore, they have four Champions Trophy titles, two more than the Tralee Warriors. After a hopeful start this season winning 115-105 against Neptune in October, a disappointing series of events led to them currently sitting at the bottom of the league table.
Ballincollig, who are primarily based at the MTU Arena in Cork, are another prestigious team to mention. They are perhaps best known for their loyal fans, which may have fuelled them to go on and win the 2022/23 Super League. Ballincollig suffered a tight defeat against the Limerick Celtics in their first game this season, losing by one point. Serving as a wake-up call, they slowly but surely crept up the league table and are a strong contender for the trophy.
Star Players
Being aware of some key names to look out for can help you not only in recognising players and teams, but also in betting. Significant markets like total points and match spread are more easily understood when you research the team players and their abilities.
Jordan Blount, who plays for KCYMS Killorglin, is a Cork-born player who previously played for Neptune. His professional involvement in basketball started in his youth, and Blount’s participation in the FIBA U20 European Championship is what put him on the map. Since then, Blount has represented Ireland in the FIBA EuroBasket Pre-Qualifiers, and also the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 Pre-Qualifiers.
Kyle Hosford, currently at UCC Demons, is also a part of the Ireland Senior Men’s team. Famously, Hosford was the vice-captain when Ireland won the FIBA European Championship for Small Countries in 2021, and was promoted to captain the following season. So far, he has won the Super League four times, and the Irish National Cup three times.
Pay attention to other names like Conor Quinn, Roy Downey, and young star Rapolas Buivydas.
Other High-Profile Leagues To Mention
Apart from the Super League, an honourable mention is the Men’s Division One. It is the second-highest national league, featuring prominent teams like Limerick Sport Eagles, Dublin Lions, and Drogheda Wolves. In betting, it is vital to keep yourself updated as players are constantly being swapped and teams can be relegated or promoted. All in all, betting on Irish basketball is a dynamic hobby that often proves tricky if you don’t research or watch upcoming games. Using promotions like enhanced prices or tuning in to broadcasts combined with the knowledge in this article is the best way to improve your chances at securing a winning bet!
