Alonzo Mourning praised LeBron James’ remarkable career longevity, comparing him to other all-time greats like Tom Brady and Tiger Woods. “Nobody’s done it the way he’s done it, ever… It speaks to his longevity. You think about the great ones… LeBron is put in that category for sure,” Mourning told D.J. Siddiqi of VideoGamer in an exclusive interview.
Mourning, a longtime Miami Heat icon, noted James’ ability to maintain elite performance well into his 40s. Last season, James averaged 24.4 points, 8.2 assists, and 7.8 rebounds during his age-40 campaign, demonstrating his capacity to stay dominant despite entering his 23rd NBA season.
This year, James has shifted into a supporting role for the Los Angeles Lakers behind Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves, who are averaging 35.3 and 28.1 points per game, respectively. The strategy has helped the Lakers start the season 16-5, second-best in the Western Conference, even with James missing the early portion due to injury.
Mourning emphasized James’ dedication to physical maintenance and smart career management. “It speaks to how well he takes care of his body, how well he’s invested into his body,” Mourning said, highlighting the discipline required to sustain such longevity at an elite level.
Reflecting on his own Heat experience, Mourning also commented on the franchise’s long-standing culture of excellence under Pat Riley. “He’s 80 years old… He’s still working to get something out of this. The Heat, currently 14-8, have exceeded preseason expectations despite the departure of Jimmy Butler. Head coach Erik Spoelstra, who started in the organization as a video coordinator in 1995, signed an eight-year, $120 million extension in 2024 and continues to guide the team effectively. “He’s a proven champion… He’s showing it when everybody in the preseason polls… didn’t count us as being one of the top teams in the East,” Mourning said.
