Cooper Flagg after Mavericks’ win vs. Heat: “Playing with AD makes everything easier”

Cooper Flagg described his first extended experience with a lead as “different” but “good,” highlighting the Mavericks’ ability to rotate multiple players and maintain momentum in Wednesday’s 118-108 win over the Miami Heat.

The rookie credited his strong on-court chemistry with Ryan Nembhard, calling him a player who “just makes everybody better out there,” noting the confidence Nembhard brought to the team over recent games.

Off the court, Flagg emphasized the bond he shares with fellow newcomers Ryan Nembhard, Miles Kelley, and Moussa Cisse, describing the group as a support system navigating the rookie experience together.

Despite early foul trouble, Flagg stayed composed, trusting his teammates to cover defensively, saying, “I’m gonna get three more” while managing his minutes cautiously.

Playing alongside Anthony Davis provided a significant boost, according to Flagg. “The gravity that he has… playing off him, it makes it easier,” he said, citing the space Davis and Klay Thompson create as key to finding scoring opportunities.

Flagg also explained the sequence of the final scoring play, giving credit to Davis’ decision-making. “He made a drive, stepped up… and I was right place, right time to finish it off,” Flagg said.

The rookie discussed his shot selection and confidence, noting that guidance from coaches and teammates allows him to be assertive without forcing plays. “It makes it easier for me to just be myself and get to my spots,” he said.

Reflecting on the early season without Davis and previous injuries, Flagg acknowledged the growth gained during tougher stretches. “I think I grew a lot in that time period… hopefully I continue to get better,” he said.

Defensively, Flagg highlighted the team’s adjustments against Miami’s pace and offensive style, emphasizing communication and helping teammates in gaps to stop drives.

The Mavericks improved to a three-game winning streak, with Flagg scoring 22 points alongside Davis’ 17 points and 17 rebounds. Nembhard added 15 points and 13 assists, while Klay Thompson contributed 17 off the bench.

Dallas looks to extend the streak against Oklahoma City on Friday, with Flagg and the rookies expected to continue their development alongside veteran leadership.
