The NBA announced Wednesday that the Philadelphia 76ers have been fined $100,000 for violating the league’s injury reporting rules following Joel Embiid’s unexpected appearance against the Atlanta Hawks on Nov. 30.
The league stated that Embiid had been listed as “Out” in the team’s initial injury report before taking the floor, prompting the penalty because of Philadelphia’s prior history of reporting violations.
The decision comes during a season in which the Sixers sit at 11-9 and continue adjusting their rotation around Embiid’s limited availability in the early weeks of the campaign.
The reigning MVP has appeared in only seven games, averaging 19.4 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 3.1 assists in 24.3 minutes, giving the team a controlled workload while recovering from multiple early-season setbacks.
Tyrese Maxey has carried the offensive responsibility during Embiid’s absences, posting 32.5 points and 7.5 assists per game across 20 starts while ranking among the league’s highest-usage guards.
Philadelphia’s wing rotation around Quentin Grimes, Kelly Oubre Jr., and rookie VJ Edgecombe has also seen increased roles, with each logging more than 33 minutes per game and supplying scoring and rebounding behind Maxey.
The timing of the violation adds scrutiny because the Sixers have dealt with roster instability across several spots, including Paul George’s brief early-season availability and Andre Drummond’s increased rebounding load.
The game in question, a 142-134 double-overtime loss to Atlanta, featured Maxey’s 44 points and Grimes’ 10 rebounds, but Embiid’s participation—after being listed as unavailable—ultimately triggered the league office’s review.
League rules require accurate and timely injury disclosures to maintain fairness across competition and betting markets, and the NBA has increased enforcement in recent seasons to ensure compliance.
The Sixers have previously been warned about similar inconsistencies, which factored into the severity of this latest fine.
Philadelphia responded on the court two nights later with a 121-102 win over Washington, a matchup in which Maxey scored 35 points and Jabari Walker grabbed 12 rebounds as the Sixers moved to 11-9.
