People who spoke with Tim Bontemps expressed optimism that Joel Embiid should gradually regain comfort and rhythm as the season progresses, especially as he adjusts to playing on his surgically repaired left knee.

However, his current situation highlights lingering uncertainty.

Embiid has now missed nine straight games due to soreness in his right knee, a reminder that Philadelphia can’t assume steady availability from him, even when the original injury is on the opposite leg.

There’s also the question of how well he’ll fit into the increasingly fast-paced environment of today’s NBA.

With the league trending toward quicker possessions and more up-and-down action, evaluators wonder how sustainable his impact will be.

As one scout told Bontemps, “You look at where the league is heading, with the pace and the speed the game is being played. He was having trouble keeping up with it when he was healthy, let alone now.”
