LeBron James highlighted resiliency and team defense as key in the Los Angeles Lakers’ 108-106 victory over the Utah Jazz on Sunday at Delta Center.
“Every night in the NBA, a team’s up 10 late and the other team cuts into it. We did that and got the last stop when it mattered,” James said, pointing to the decisive defensive stand in the final possession.
James acknowledged the challenge of maintaining rhythm after missing the first 14 games of the season. “The four days between games kind of threw things off, but getting back on the floor and practicing with the team helped,” he explained.
The Lakers overcame the loss of Deandre Ayton with contributions from Jaxson Hayes and Maxi Kleber. “Jaxson stepped in seamlessly, and Maxi gave us big-time minutes, physicality, and a crucial dunk late,” James said.
Despite the team struggling from three-point range, James expressed confidence in the Lakers’ shot creation. “We’re getting great looks, everyone’s involved, and the numbers will average out. I’m not worried,” he said.
James discussed his own conditioning, noting that game action is the best way to regain “basketball shape.” He also praised the team’s adaptability in handling absences and lineup changes.
On LeBron’s court awareness, he pointed to a stretch in the second quarter when he quickly got involved in three straight baskets after signaling the bench. “I ended up finding my rhythm and contributing when needed,” he said.
James also reflected on facing a veteran opponent in Chris Paul, who recently announced his final season. “I hope he enjoys every moment. He’s had an incredible career, and this last year should be about happiness,” he said.
With Luka Doncic scoring 33 points and grabbing 11 rebounds, Austin Reaves adding 22 points, and Rui Hachimura contributing 13, the Lakers extended their winning streak to four games, improving to 12-4.
The Lakers now prepare to host the Los Angeles Clippers on Tuesday, while the Jazz travel to Golden State on Monday.
