Lakers head coach JJ Redick emphasized defense and bench contributions as key factors in Los Angeles’ narrow 108-106 victory over the Utah Jazz on Sunday at Delta Center.
“Maxi coming in in that second half really changed the game for us with his physicality. Made some plays at the rim, had the big bucket late, but he was great,” Redick said, highlighting Maxi Kleber’s impact after Deandre Ayton exited with a knee bruise.
Gabe Vincent also received praise, with Redick noting, “Those two guys playing that extended run, that’s really where our defense was solidified. We held them to 22 points for the rest of the half after their early third-quarter run.”
Despite Los Angeles shooting struggles, Redick underscored the team’s ball movement, pointing out the 23 assists as evidence of their offensive potential. “We’ve got to make shots and we’ve got to shoot them with confidence,” he said, adding that the team is still adjusting after off days and extended breaks.
On LeBron James’ performance in his first road game of the season, Redick praised his transition play and decision-making. “He did a lot of good things as a passer. We had a lot of success out of the post and in elbow isolation situations,” he said.
Redick also stressed the importance of mental awareness and choosing to play physically on defense. “It’s not necessarily about turning down shots or being lazy—it’s the awareness and execution to do it in a physical manner,” he explained.
Addressing the team’s resilience despite injuries, Redick credited togetherness and adaptability. “We just do whatever the game requires that night to put us in a position to win,” he said, noting that bench contributions and strategic adjustments have been key to Los Angeles’ 12-4 record.
With Luka Doncic scoring 33 points and grabbing 11 rebounds, the Lakers extended their winning streak to four games. Austin Reaves added 22 points, Rui Hachimura 13, and Kleber sealed the win with his 1,000th career field goal late in the fourth quarter.
Utah’s Keyonte George led the Jazz with 27 points and eight assists, while Lauri Markkanen contributed 20 points, including 12 in the fourth. The Jazz fell to 5-11, struggling to overcome the absence of key players.
The Lakers host the Los Angeles Clippers on Tuesday, while Utah travels to Golden State on Monday.
