Knicks shooting guard Landry Shamet had to leave Saturday’s game in Orlando early in the first quarter after his right shoulder appeared to come out of its socket, according to Stefan Bondy of The New York Post.
Head coach Mike Brown said after the game that the player will undergo a full evaluation in the next couple of days to determine the severity of the injury.
Shamet was hurt when he ran into a screen set by Magic center Wendell Carter Jr. He grabbed at his shoulder immediately, grimaced in pain, and went straight to the locker room.
The concern is heightened because this is the same shoulder Shamet dislocated during the 2024 preseason, which led to him being waived and sidelined until late December, when he returned on a one-year minimum deal.
That situation could repeat itself, as the guard is currently on a $2.3MM contract that remains non-guaranteed until January 10.
He re-signed with New York in September and earned his spot by winning a training camp competition for the lone veteran contract the team could fit under the hard cap.
Shamet had been a meaningful contributor this season, averaging 9.9 PPG in 14 games heading into Saturday and shooting 45.2% from the field and 42.4% from deep. He made his third straight start – and sixth overall – with the team still dealing with several injuries.
He had also scored in double figures in four of his last five games, including a 36-point outing against Miami on Wednesday.
Bondy adds that rookie Mohamed Diawara saw more early minutes after Shamet left, and Tyler Kolek and Pacome Dadiet also played in the first half.
All three could see increased roles if Shamet’s injury proves serious.
