Cooper Flagg highlighted the Mavericks’ late-game execution following their 138-133 overtime victory against the Portland Trail Blazers on Sunday. Flagg’s key assist to P.J. Washington Jr. set up a crucial dunk that gave Dallas the lead for good.
“We love to turn defense into offense,” Flagg said, recalling the fast-break play that sparked the 6-0 run in overtime. “I just saw him running down the court, so I made a heads-up play and threw it down there.”
Flagg also praised his chemistry with Washington and Brandon Williams. “Two young guys with competitive spirits,” he said. “We trust each other to make the right plays and get downhill with an advantage.”
The 18-year-old guard credited his teammates for creating scoring opportunities. “Just finding better spots, sticking with it, and my teammates getting me the ball in good spots,” he said. Flagg scored 21 points, finishing strong in the paint during overtime.
Flagg noted the importance of using Dallas’ size advantage. “With their center off the bench, we could get downhill and make plays in the paint,” he explained. He added that finding open shooters, like Max Christie, contributed to the win.
He reflected on the experience gained in close games. “Being in these moments with my teammates is huge,” Flagg said. “It helps the game slow down for you and builds confidence in decision-making.”
Flagg also credited a halftime conversation with Daniel Gafford for helping him adjust in the second half. “He gave me advice to stay present and be more aggressive,” Flagg said. “It was big coming from someone like him.”
The Mavericks shot a perfect 7-of-7 from the field in overtime, all two-pointers, and limited turnovers, committing just 14 compared to Portland’s 20. Dallas’ performance was bolstered by P.J. Washington Jr., who also scored 21 points, and Gafford, who added 20, including seven in the extra period.
Portland, despite grabbing 22 offensive rebounds and receiving 36 points from Shaedon Sharpe, fell short in overtime. The Mavericks improved to 4-10, snapping a three-game losing streak, while the Trail Blazers dropped to 6-7.
Dallas will face the Minnesota Timberwolves on Monday, while Portland hosts the Phoenix Suns on Tuesday. Flagg emphasized that the team’s growing cohesion and trust could be key moving forward. “It’s about making the right play every possession and helping the team win,” he said.
