Victor Wembanyama led the San Antonio Spurs to a 107–101 victory over the Miami Heat, marking the first time in franchise history the Spurs began a season 5-0. He finished with 27 points, 18 rebounds, six assists, and five blocks at Frost Bank Center on Thursday night.
Wembanyama emphasized the team’s effort in securing the wins. “We didn’t get those five wins randomly. We work for it. We started the season strong, and we need to keep that streak going,” he said. He added that seeing results after executing well on the court pushes the team forward.
Late in the game, Wembanyama energized the crowd after being fouled. “It’s like the exclamation point when we have a 99% chance of winning. I’m feeding off that energy…it feels great because it was a hard game,” he said, highlighting the importance of fan support.
Wembanyama also credited the team’s growth and cohesion. “The difference is we spend a lot more time together, even in the summer, and everybody’s getting better. All parts of the organization are growing, even the fans,” he explained.
The Spurs relied on balanced contributions, with Stephon Castle scoring 21 points with eight assists, Devin Vassell adding 17 points, and six players reaching double figures. Despite Miami’s late 17-1 run early in the fourth quarter, San Antonio closed the game on an 8-3 run to secure the win.
Wembanyama discussed recovery and resilience. “High-usage players have to take care of recovery even more…when you do more things, more muscles get sore. It’s important to stay ready,” he said. He also addressed on-court challenges, including dunks from Bam Adebayo and Zion Williamson, noting that stopping his matchup’s momentum is key.
On teamwork, Wembanyama praised his teammates’ role execution. “We’re learning to play together, and I’m learning to position myself better for my teammates. I trust them in that sense,” he said. He highlighted assists from Devin Vassell and Dylan Harper, calling the plays critical to sustaining the team’s offensive rhythm.
The Spurs remain undefeated at 5-0, joining the Miami Heat and Sacramento Kings as franchises that historically struggled to start 5-0. Miami fell to 3-2, with Bam Adebayo scoring 31 points and Andrew Wiggins adding 24. San Antonio will face the Phoenix Suns next, while Miami heads to Los Angeles to play the Lakers.
