After an offseason filled with uncertainty and prolonged contract negotiations, Jonathan Kuminga wasted no time showing his value to the Golden State Warriors.

In the team’s season-opening win over the Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday, the 23-year-old forward delivered an impressive all-around performance, recording 17 points, nine rebounds, and six assists – looking every bit the part of a player ready to take the next step.

Kuminga’s breakout game came after a summer in which his future with Golden State appeared unclear, as questions lingered about his role and the Warriors’ long-term plans for him.

But following his strong debut, he made it clear that his focus this season is on doing whatever it takes to help the team win.

“It was just one of my goals coming into this year,” Kuminga said, according to Marcus Thompson II of The Athletic.

“Just trying to be on the boards as much as I can. And guarding the best players. The main thing moving forward is just getting better and doing that every day. When my shots are not falling, just find a way to impact the game. Doing the small things that matter. I’m gonna have my moment when they’re gonna need me to go out and score.”

While his offensive burst in the third quarter – 13 points and three made three-pointers – stood out, it was a key hustle play late in the fourth that drew the most praise from his teammates.

As ESPN’s Anthony Slater reported, Kuminga grabbed a crucial offensive rebound that led to a Stephen Curry three-pointer, effectively sealing the Warriors’ win.

“That rebound is what everyone in the world has been waiting to see,” said Draymond Green after the game.

“You have that athleticism, you go make big plays. You have superstar potential, you go make big plays. Those are game-winning plays. When you ask for opportunity, you must deliver. He’s been very vocal about his opportunity, and he delivered.”
