Luka Doncic scored 43 points in the Los Angeles Lakers’ 119–109 season opener loss to the Golden State Warriors but pointed to a recurring third-quarter issue as the turning point.

“Honestly, I would say that the third quarter, the start. I think we had this problem last year too, so I think that was most of the problem,” Doncic said.

The Lakers trailed by just one point at halftime before Golden State went on a 19–4 run to open the second half.

Doncic emphasized that him attacking the paint was key for the Lakers’ offense. “Just attack the paint and then I think when I attack the paint better things happen for our team,” he explained.

Doncic also highlighted the team’s need to improve continuity with new teammates. He reflected on building chemistry with Deandre Ayton, saying, “I think he prefers that pocket pass I haven’t played I don’t think with a center like that.I have to do a better job just talking to him like what I want, what he wants and today it was on me and I didn’t give him enough touches.”

On defense, Doncic addressed the challenge of guarding multiple players, including Stephen Curry and Jimmy Butler. “You got to try to be physical. Obviously, if they’re in bonus it’s a little harder, but in the end you got to get a stop and that’s what’s going to win you the game,” he said.

The Lakers faced additional challenges with LeBron James sidelined due to sciatica, marking the first season opener missed by the 40-year-old forward in his 23-year career.

Despite the setback, Doncic said his comfort level with the roster remains high. “My comfort level is good. I think there was a lot of positive things tonight. Obviously a lot of things we need to work on. Like I said, especially third quarter. We got to figure that out.”

Doncic also noted his improved conditioning after summer training. “Yeah I feel it. Like I say, less tiring, better shape, so just trying to get a win,” he said. He briefly addressed a minor groin tweak during the fourth quarter, calling it “probably nothing.”

Despite Doncic’s standout performance, the Lakers struggled from beyond the arc, shooting 25 percent, and missed 40 free throws. Austin Reaves added 26 points, and Deandre Ayton contributed 10 points and six rebounds in his Lakers debut.

Los Angeles (0–1) will aim to rebound against the Minnesota Timberwolves on Thursday, while Golden State (1–0) returns to Chase Center to face the Denver Nuggets.
