The review process focused on Aspiration’s credibility and its ability to meet financial commitments, as required under league rules. Sources said it is unclear whether the NBA conducted any further assessments after initially approving the arrangement.
The endorsement deal between star Kawhi Leonard and Aspiration, signed months later, is now under league investigation for potential salary cap circumvention. Clippers owner Steve Ballmer and team executives remain confident the organization complied with NBA rules.
Team insiders described the ongoing probe as “exhausting” and “infuriating” but expressed no fear of major penalties. The investigation, led by law firm Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz, is examining whether Leonard’s contract violated salary cap regulations.
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver has emphasized due process while financial documents are reviewed. Sources indicate the investigation is not expected to conclude before the All-Star break, leaving uncertainty for the Clippers’ roster and planning.
If violations are confirmed, the NBA could impose fines of up to $7.5 million on the Clippers and $350,000 on Leonard, suspend team officials, strip draft picks, or void Leonard’s contract through 2026-27. Analyst John Hollinger described the allegations as “beyond the pale,” noting that severe penalties remain a possibility.
Voidance of Leonard’s deal, valued at over $50 million for next season, could also unexpectedly create salary cap flexibility for the Clippers, potentially allowing them to pursue top free agents. Ballmer has denied involvement in Leonard’s endorsement, and the team maintains it followed all league regulations.
