The Phoenix Suns improved to 2-0 in preseason action. They outlasted the Brooklyn Nets 132-127 in overtime at Venetian Arena in Macao, China, on Friday.
Brooklyn jumped ahead early in the first quarter. The Nets built a 39-29 lead behind Cam Thomas’s 11 points and Nic Claxton’s strong play inside.
Phoenix starters struggled from the field. Devin Booker tallied eight points but committed three turnovers as the Suns trailed by 10 at one point.
Dillon Brooks sparked a brief response with nine points. Still, Brooklyn held a 39-29 edge after 12 minutes.
The second quarter saw more back-and-forth. Phoenix cut the gap to 59-71 at halftime after a late 3-pointer from Collin Gillespie.
Thomas extended his hot streak with seven more points. He finished the half with 18 points on efficient shooting.
Claxton added five assists and nine rebounds before intermission. His dunks helped Brooklyn maintain control.
Phoenix leaned on bench production in the third. Jordan Goodwin erupted for 11 points as the Suns tied the score at 72-72.
Oso Ighodaro blocked three shots and scored 10 points. His dunks and tip-ins fueled a 30-point quarter for Phoenix.
Brooklyn’s lead vanished late in the period. Thomas’s 3-pointer tied it at 74-74, but the Suns pulled ahead 89-84 entering the fourth.
The final frame turned chaotic with 20 turnovers combined. Phoenix built a 102-105 deficit before a furious rally.
Goodwin drained a 28-footer to cut it to 110-116. His 19 points led all Suns scorers off the bench.
Brooklyn countered through Noah Clowney’s 13 points. He hit key free throws to push the Nets ahead 119-114.
Jared Butler’s layup forced overtime at 121-121. He ended with eight points and four assists in limited minutes.
Overtime belonged to Phoenix. Goodwin scored five quick points, including a driving layup for a 129-125 lead.
Khaman Maluach added 10 points and seven rebounds in 20 minutes. His free throws helped seal the win.
Brooklyn’s Michael Porter Jr. scored 13 points in 20 minutes. Terance Mann contributed four points and two steals.
The Nets turned it over 32 times total. That handed Phoenix 25 points off miscues.
Phoenix shot 44.3% from the field and 76.1% from the line. They outrebounded Brooklyn 47-43.
Goodwin earned player of the game honors with 19 points. Thomas led Brooklyn with 22 points on 7-of-12 shooting.
Brooklyn falls to 1-1 in exhibition play.
