Erik Spoelstra is expected to be named the new head coach of the U.S. men’s national basketball team, sources told ESPN’s Shams Charania. Spoelstra will succeed Steve Kerr for the upcoming 2027 World Cup and the 2028 Summer Olympics.
The Miami Heat coach served as a lead assistant on Team USA’s 2024 gold medal-winning squad. His promotion comes after Team USA went undefeated in the preliminary Olympic rounds and secured a fifth consecutive Olympic gold in Paris.
Under Spoelstra’s guidance, Team USA will aim to maintain its dominance on the international stage. The Americans defeated France 98–87 in the Olympic final, led by Stephen Curry’s 24 points, and overcame Serbia in the semifinals with a 36-point performance from Curry.
The decision to promote Spoelstra reflects USA Basketball’s focus on continuity and experience. Following the team’s fourth-place finish at the 2023 FIBA World Cup, leadership sought a coach with both NBA success and familiarity with international competition.
Spoelstra’s record with the Heat includes multiple NBA Finals appearances and two championships. His leadership style and player development experience are expected to translate to success with Team USA.
As head coach, Spoelstra will oversee preparations for the FIBA World Cup, while laying the foundation for the 2028 Summer Olympics. The U.S. will rely on a blend of returning stars and emerging talent to defend its Olympic gold medal streak.
