Paolo Banchero’s reputation has largely been built on his offensive talent, but in the Orlando Magic’s preseason opener against the Miami Heat, it was his defense that made the biggest impression.
As Jason Beede notes, it wasn’t just the stat line – three blocks in 13 minutes – that stood out, but the variety and timing of those plays.
Banchero showcased his versatility as a defender with three distinct stops: one coming in isolation against his matchup, another as a perfectly timed weak-side rotation, and the last on a chase-down in transition.
Each sequence highlighted a different aspect of defensive awareness, anticipation, and effort that the Magic hope to see more consistently from their young star.
Head coach Jamahl Mosley emphasized how important that kind of defensive commitment is for the team’s long-term success.
“That’s what it’s going to take for us to win at the highest level,” Mosley said. “If he plays with that energy and effort each and every single night defensively, it’s going to be a long night for a lot of people.”
Banchero has played 3 seasons for the Magic. He has averaged 22.4 points, 7.1 rebounds, and 4.6 assists in 198 regular-season games.
He was selected to play in 1 All-Star game and has won the Rookie of the Year award.
