San Antonio Spurs guard De’Aaron Fox admitted he isn’t certain he’ll be ready when the team tips off its season on opening night. Fox is still working his way back from surgery on his left pinkie finger, an injury that cut his previous season short.
To complicate matters, the veteran point guard also strained his right hamstring this offseason, raising additional doubts about whether he’ll be available for the Spurs’ first game.
Fox committed his future to San Antonio over the summer by signing a four-year contract extension worth more than $222 million.
The Spurs had acquired the dynamic guard from the Sacramento Kings just ahead of last year’s trade deadline, with the vision that Fox would serve as the long-term backcourt partner to rising superstar Victor Wembanyama.
His playmaking, speed, and leadership are expected to be critical as San Antonio builds around its generational big man.
The injury questions don’t stop with Fox. The Spurs may also be without Dylan Harper, the No. 2 overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, who is recovering from thumb surgery.
Harper’s availability for the opener is uncertain as the team takes a cautious approach with its prized rookie.
San Antonio’s season begins on Wednesday, October 22, with a road matchup against the Dallas Mavericks.
Whether Fox and Harper are ready by then remains an open question, potentially leaving the Spurs shorthanded to start a highly anticipated season.
