Indiana Pacers guard Tyrese Haliburton will not suit up this season after suffering a torn right Achilles tendon in Game 7 of the 2025 NBA Finals. Still, the All-NBA guard is making it clear that he plans to play a significant role for the defending Eastern Conference champions.
Speaking during the Pacers’ 2025 Media Day, Haliburton explained how his focus has shifted to leadership and perspective while sidelined.
“I think whenever when you don’t get to play, you get a new perspective on things,” Haliburton said. “I feel like I’m going to be able to see the game in a different way. Potentially, seeing more from a coaching perspective where I don’t always see eye to eye with the coaching staff and what they’re seeing, so I look forward to being able to digest the game without playing for a full year.”
Haliburton described how he wants to serve as a bridge between teammates and coaches, providing insight from both sides of the locker room. He noted that his year away from the court will allow him to learn, observe, and contribute to the team’s growth in a new way.
“I think being able to still be in the locker room with the guys and hear what they’re seeing but also to be able to sit with the coaches on the bench and hearing what they’re seeing and kind of be the bridge between that,” Haliburton continued. “I think it’s going to be an exciting year for our group. We got a lot of guys coming in in new roles and a lot of guys growing in different areas.”
The 25-year-old enters the season after leading Indiana to the NBA Finals for the first time since 2000. He earned his second consecutive All-NBA selection in 2025 and produced some of the most clutch performances in postseason history, including game-winners against both the Bucks and Cavaliers.
Despite his absence, the Pacers are looking to build on last year’s success with Pascal Siakam, Bennedict Mathurin, and Andrew Nembhard expected to shoulder larger roles. The team also added depth in the offseason, preparing to adjust without its star point guard on the floor.
