The Los Angeles Lakers have signed head coach JJ Redick to a two-year extension, keeping him with the team through the 2029–30 season, according to NBA insider Shams Charania. The deal brings the total value of Redick’s contract to $45 million.
Redick, who joined the Lakers in June 2024 after a transition from broadcasting, guided the team through his first season on the sidelines. Charania noted the extension reflects the franchise’s confidence in Redick as the team’s basketball leader beyond the LeBron James era.
Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka confirmed the deal during the team’s 2025 Media Day, emphasizing that the extension signals stability at a position that has seen frequent turnover in past years. “We wanted to make it clear JJ Redick is the coach not just now but moving forward for the long term,” Pelinka said.
The 41-year-old coach spent the offseason refining his approach, learning from NFL coach Sean McVay and former quarterback Tom Brady. Redick focused on player conditioning, with stars like Luka Doncic, LeBron James, and Austin Reaves participating in daily preparations since mid-August.
Redick expressed gratitude for the extension, highlighting the trust from ownership and management. He also credited his coaching staff for their work in developing strategies and maintaining progress throughout the offseason.
The Lakers made several roster upgrades over the summer, including signing center Deandre Ayton, veteran guard Marcus Smart, and Jake LaRavia. Luka Doncic received an extension, and LeBron James opted in for another season, reinforcing the team’s core.
Redick’s extension addresses one of the Lakers’ historical challenges: coaching stability. Since Phil Jackson left in 2011, the franchise has cycled through multiple head coaches, making Redick’s long-term commitment a notable shift in approach.
Entering his second season, Redick faces heightened expectations to translate offseason improvements into consistent performance on the court. Last season, the Lakers showed promise, including a six-game winning streak early in the campaign, but fell short of championship contention.
