The Philadelphia 76ers have decided to part ways with forward/center Marcus Bagley, according to Tony Jones of The Athletic.
Keith Pompey of the Philadelphia Inquirer adds that Bagley is expected to continue his development with the Sixers’ G League affiliate, the Delaware Blue Coats.
Bagley, the younger brother of Detroit Pistons big man Marvin Bagley III, had signed an Exhibit 10 contract with Philadelphia earlier this offseason.
These types of deals are often structured with a G League plan in mind, and waiving Bagley clears a path for him to join Delaware, where he’ll have the chance to showcase his skills in a more consistent role.
This move also carries a financial incentive. Under Exhibit 10 rules, Bagley will be eligible to receive a bonus of up to $85,300 if he signs with the Blue Coats and spends at least 60 days with the team during the upcoming season.
For the Sixers, it’s a common roster maneuver that allows them to retain developmental rights while Bagley continues to work on his game in the G League system.
For Bagley, it’s an opportunity to carve out a place for himself professionally and potentially earn another look at the NBA level.
