Phoenix Suns big man Mark Williams has faced constant injury setbacks early in his NBA career, to the point where the Los Angeles Lakers voided a trade last season after he failed a physical.

After appearing in a career-high 44 games with Charlotte last year, Williams is looking for a reset in Phoenix. The Suns are intent on managing his health carefully.

“We know Mark’s history and we’re trying to change it,” head coach Jordan Ott said.

“He’s been out here and has been good. Definitely added some strength to him. You can see it when he walks in the building. He definitely has great size. Excited to see where he goes.”

Ott indicated that Williams’ preseason minutes could be limited, which would also allow the Suns to evaluate rookie Khaman Maluach, along with Nick Richards and Oso Ighodaro.

“He’s in a good place,” Ott added. “We want Mark to know we care about him this year and going forward so we have a really intentional plan for him.”
