While it may not have been as dramatic a financial sacrifice as the one Jalen Brunson made by leaving over $100 million on the table in his most recent deal, Mikal Bridges still made a notable concession this summer.

The Knicks forward agreed to a four-year, $150 million extension, despite being eligible for about $156 million – roughly $6 million more.

As Steve Popper of Newsday reports, the decision speaks to Bridges’ commitment to New York and his comfort with the franchise.

Heading into the summer, there was some speculation about his long-term future. Bridges could have chosen to play out his current deal and test free agency in 2026, especially after what many considered a difficult first season in New York.

Instead, he opted to lock in early and send a clear message about where he wants to be. At Knicks media day, Bridges dismissed the idea that he had considered any other paths.

“Because I love it here,” he said. “Love the fans, love the culture, love the staff and everybody, front office, everything, teammates. That’s probably the biggest thing.”

Bridges acknowledged that his first season with the Knicks wasn’t easy. His production dipped at times, and fan expectations weighed heavily, particularly during the regular season. But rather than being discouraged, he explained that he channeled those frustrations inward.

“I know, throughout last year, last year was tough throughout the season and playoffs helped a little bit but I think I just appreciate the fans and everybody,” Bridges said.

“I think a lot of people thought I might be upset because everybody was getting on me too hard, but I think I was more mad at myself because everything they want was what I want so it’s not like a ‘why y’all getting on me?’ Some things get a little too crazy, but that’s just life [and] how it is.”

By signing the extension, Bridges committed to New York. For the Knicks, it locks in another key piece alongside Brunson as they build a contender in the East.
