Jared McCain has been dealt another setback, as the Philadelphia 76ers guard suffered a UCL tear in his right thumb during a workout on Tuesday, according to reports.

At the moment, McCain is consulting with medical specialists to determine the best course of treatment for the injury.

The timing is unfortunate for the 21-year-old guard, whose rookie season was already cut short by a meniscus tear.

Despite the early ending, McCain made a strong impression in limited action, averaging 15.3 points, 2.4 rebounds, and 2.6 assists in 25.7 minutes across 23 games.

He was drafted 16th overall by Philadelphia in the 2024 NBA Draft and had quickly established himself as a potential long-term piece for the franchise.

Should McCain miss significant time again, the 76ers may need to lean more heavily on Quentin Grimes.

The 25-year-old wing remains in a restricted free agency impasse with the team, but his value would rise considerably if McCain is sidelined to start the season.

Grimes has shown promise as a two-way contributor, and an extended opportunity could elevate his role in Philadelphia’s rotation.

The Sixers now face not only uncertainty around McCain’s recovery but also added pressure to resolve Grimes’ contract situation before the season tips off.
