Nikola Jokic and the Denver Nuggets remain aligned on his contract future despite the three-time MVP opting not to sign an extension this summer. Analysts stress that the decision is strategic rather than a signal of discontent.
According to NBA insider Zach Lowe, there has never been a whisper of Jokic wanting out of Denver, even amid coaching changes and roster turmoil. “There’s never been a whisper of like this guy wants to go to a different team,” Lowe said on The Zach Lowe Show, via HoopsHype.
Jokic’s current extension offer is a three-year deal worth approximately $206.4 million. Waiting until 2026, he could be eligible for a four-year deal potentially valued at $285.4 million, according to Keith Smith of Spotrac.
A Nuggets front office executive told Smith, “No worry at all. It’s the smart move from his side… Same offer, plus one more year, will be there for him a year now from now. He knows that, and we’re all on the same page.”
Sam Amick of The Athletic echoed that there are no indications Jokic is considering leaving Denver. He cautioned, however, that while the situation appears stable, the team should remain proactive in managing its roster.
The Nuggets are coming off a 36-46 season and a second-round playoff exit under a restructured management and coaching staff. Despite missing the playoffs, the organization has reiterated its commitment to building a championship roster around Jokic.
Jokic, 30, delivered another elite campaign in 2024–25, averaging 29.6 points, 12.7 rebounds, and 10.2 assists over 70 regular-season games. In the playoffs, he posted 26.2 points, 12.7 rebounds, and 8.0 assists per game across 14 contests.
Sources note that Jokic’s decision to delay signing is financially motivated rather than emotionally. By waiting, he preserves leverage for a more lucrative long-term deal while continuing to compete at a high level.
