Magic Johnson shared his thoughts on the NBA’s greatest players during a recent appearance on Earn Your Leisure, drawing a clear line between Michael Jordan and LeBron James.

The Hall of Fame guard credited Jordan as the best to ever play, while also acknowledging James’ dominance in the modern game. “LeBron is a bad boy too. But he’s not Michael,” Johnson said, via HoopsHype.

Johnson explained that his own edge over Jordan came only in passing and leadership. But when it came to scoring, athleticism, and finishing at the rim, he gave the nod to Jordan without hesitation.

The five-time champion recalled a famous moment from the 1991 NBA Finals, when Jordan switched hands mid-air against the Lakers for an iconic basket. “Right hand — we thought we had him. Then he looked at us mid-air, switched it to the left. Tongue out. Glass. Bucket,” Johnson said.

For Johnson, that play symbolized Jordan’s unique brilliance. “Nobody alive has been able to do that. That boy is too bad,” he added.

LeBron, entering his 23rd NBA season with the Los Angeles Lakers, has four championships, four MVP awards, and is the league’s all-time leading scorer. His longevity and consistency have fueled arguments that he has surpassed Jordan.

Yet Johnson’s perspective highlights the intangible impact of Jordan’s prime. From his competitive drive to his ability to deliver in the biggest moments, Johnson framed him as the ultimate standard.
