Norman Powell is expected to start the 2025/26 season on an expiring contract, but the Miami Heat are open to extending the veteran wing depending on his early-season performance, according to a source speaking to Barry Jackson of The Miami Herald.
The 32-year-old Powell joined Miami in July via a three-team trade that sent Kyle Anderson and Kevin Love to Utah. The move briefly pushed the Heat into luxury tax territory, though the team later cleared it by trading Haywood Highsmith.
Despite that, the outgoing package was modest for a player coming off arguably the best season of his career.
Powell started all 60 games for the Clippers in 2024/25, averaging 21.8 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 2.1 assists in 32.6 minutes per game while shooting .484/.418/.804.
He also set career highs in points, minutes, and three-pointers made (179).
Powell will earn about $20.5 million this season, the final year of his five-year, $90 million deal with Portland. He can sign an extension anytime before June 30, after which he would become an unrestricted free agent.
Miami’s salary cap situation offers flexibility, with roughly $35 million tied up in Terry Rozier and Simone Fontecchio coming off the books after 2025/26.
The Heat also need to consider Tyler Herro, a 2027 free agent, and Andrew Wiggins, with a 2026/27 player option.
Since Powell hasn’t yet played for Miami, the front office will likely wait until the season begins to assess his fit and evaluate the team’s cap situation.
Herro will also be eligible to negotiate an extension before the regular season starts, which may influence Powell’s future.
