Miikka Muurinen’s rise on the international stage has placed him among the most highly coveted prospects in the 2026 recruiting class.
On The Hoop Collective podcast, ESPN’s Brian Windhorst revealed that scouts expect the Finnish forward to play college basketball next season, adding that “Muurinen is going to be a top recruit” and that numerous programs are competing for his commitment.
The 18-year-old has already gained attention at EuroBasket 2025, where he is averaging 5.8 points and 2.0 rebounds in just over 10 minutes per game for Finland. His standout moment came against Serbia in the Round of 16, when he scored 9 points in limited action.
Standing 2.10 meters tall with a 2.20-meter wingspan, Muurinen has showcased the length and mobility that modern scouts prioritize. His ability to switch defensively, rebound, and finish around the rim has been matched by flashes of perimeter shooting.
Recruiting outlets Rivals, 247Sports, and ESPN all list him as a five-star prospect, ranking him inside the top 10 of the 2026 class. Arkansas, Duke, Kentucky, North Carolina, and UCLA are among the schools actively recruiting him, according to NBA Big Board.
Muurinen’s path to this point has been unconventional. After starting at Beat Basket in Järvenpää, Finland, he moved to Spain at age 15 to join Zentro Basket Madrid. He later transitioned to the United States, playing for Sunrise Christian Academy before transferring to Arizona Compass Prep.
His breakout came in July 2024 at the Nike EYBL Peach Jam, where he scored 21 points in the championship game to help Bradley Beal Elite secure the title. The performance solidified his status as one of the premier rising prospects.
Internationally, Muurinen gained further experience with the Next Generation Select Team at the EuroLeague Next Generation tournament in Dubai. He averaged 7 points, 5 rebounds, and a block per game against elite competition.
While his defensive instincts and versatility are viewed as NBA-ready traits, scouts believe his shooting consistency and playmaking will determine his ceiling at the professional level.
Momentum around his profile is expected to continue building as both NCAA programs and NBA franchises monitor his development. A college commitment may not come immediately, but recruiting battles are already intensifying.
