Nikola Vucevic has officially ended his international career with Montenegro following the team’s 89-83 loss to Great Britain at EuroBasket.

The 34-year-old center confirmed his decision after the defeat in Tampere, marking the close of a decade-long run as Montenegro’s leading player.

“It sucks for me to finish [international career] this way. I would have loved to play more in Riga, but it is what it is,” Vucevic told reporters, as relayed by BasketNews.

The Chicago Bulls veteran added: “I’d like to thank my teammates, coaches, and most importantly, the fans for everything they did throughout my career with the national team. It was an honor to play here, but that’s sports. I enjoyed playing here, but it’s time for a new generation to leave its mark.”

Vucevic was Montenegro’s standout performer in the group stage finale, posting 31 points, 11 rebounds, and seven assists. His double-double kept the game competitive, but turnovers and defensive breakdowns proved costly.

Great Britain snapped a 12-year EuroBasket drought with the win, led by captain Myles Hesson’s 25 points and Akwasi Yeboah’s 23. Guard Luke Nelson also added 12 points and eight assists, hitting all six free throws to help secure the result.

Montenegro started hot from the field, shooting 10-for-13 early, but 18 turnovers shifted momentum. Great Britain used a decisive 23-16 run in the second quarter and held firm in the final minutes.

The loss eliminated Montenegro from contention, leaving them 1-4 in Group B alongside Great Britain. Sweden advanced instead due to superior point differential.

Vucevic’s retirement closes a significant chapter for Montenegro, as he served as the centerpiece of the national team for more than a decade. His presence helped elevate the program to multiple EuroBasket appearances and gave Montenegro international recognition.
