The Golden State Warriors are actively interested in acquiring Chicago Bulls guard Josh Giddey, according to NBA insider Jake Fischer. Multiple teams, including Golden State, have reached out to Giddey’s representatives as the restricted free agency period continues without a contract agreement.
Fischer reported on Marc Stein’s Substack, The Stein Line, that the Warriors were nearly able to draft Giddey in 2021. They had planned to pick him seventh overall but shifted to selecting Jonathan Kuminga after the Oklahoma City Thunder chose Giddey sixth.
Despite ongoing interest, a trade involving Giddey remains complicated. Salary cap restrictions and base year compensation rules under the current collective bargaining agreement have slowed negotiations. Sources indicate no viable trade pathway is currently available.
Golden State and Chicago have reportedly discussed a framework that could involve Giddey and Kuminga. However, Kuminga’s camp reportedly seeks about $25 million annually, while Giddey’s side aims for closer to $30 million, creating a contract negotiation gap.
The Bulls have maintained interest in Kuminga since past trade deadlines, suggesting the Warriors’ pursuit of Giddey could depend on decisions made about Kuminga and other roster components.
At 22 years old and standing 6-foot-8, Giddey averaged 12.3 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 4.8 assists last season. His versatile skill set fits Golden State’s style, contributing to their sustained interest.
While the Warriors’ desire for Giddey is clear, sources say a deal is unlikely to materialize in the near future due to the complex financial and roster constraints both teams face.
The restricted free agency window remains open until October 1, leaving room for developments as Golden State evaluates its options and the Bulls consider their own plans.
