Trae Young frustrated over stalled extension talks

Atlanta Hawks guard Trae Young is reportedly feeling frustrated over the lack of progress in contract extension talks. Despite being eligible for a new deal this summer, Young has not yet reached an agreement with the team.

As a result, the star point guard intends to play out the upcoming season under his current contract, postponing any decisions about his long-term future in Atlanta until the following offseason.

Young still holds a lucrative $48.9 million player option for the 2026–27 season, giving him some control over his next move.

Under current league rules, Young is eligible to sign a four-year extension worth $222.4 million. However, the 26-year-old could become eligible for an even more substantial deal – potentially valued at $335.9 million over five years – if he earns All-NBA honors during the 2025–26 season.

Such a recognition would make him eligible for the so-called “supermax” contract, significantly boosting his earning potential and strengthening his leverage in negotiations.

In the meantime, the Hawks have been active in reshaping their roster. This offseason, Atlanta added veteran big man Kristaps Porzingis, versatile guard Nickeil Alexander-Walker, and promising rookie Asa Newell.

The team is also set to welcome back forward Jalen Johnson, who had been sidelined with an injury during the second half of last season.

These changes suggest the franchise is committed to surrounding Young with more talent as they aim to climb back into Eastern Conference contention.

But Young isn’t the only Hawks player with contract questions looming. Dyson Daniels, who shares the backcourt with Young, is also eligible for a rookie scale extension.

The team and Daniels have until the start of the regular season to reach an agreement. If no deal is finalized by then, Daniels will enter restricted free agency in the summer of 2026, giving Atlanta the right to match any offer he receives from other teams.

As the Hawks head into a pivotal season, the unresolved contract situations of both Young and Daniels add another layer of intrigue to a franchise looking to solidify its core and re-establish itself as a contender in the East.
