The Moda Center, home of the Portland Trail Blazers, is operating under a lease set to expire in 2030.
In his analysis, Sean Highkin speculates that once new ownership takes over the franchise, they are likely to seek financial support from the state to fund the construction of a new arena – a common trend in modern sports franchise management.
This expectation gained further credibility when NBA Commissioner Adam Silver recently stated that one of the significant considerations for any incoming ownership group is the need for a modern facility, suggesting that Portland’s current arena may no longer meet league standards.
However, state and local leadership appear to have a different vision.
In response to Silver’s remarks, Oregon Governor Tina Kotek and Portland Mayor Keith Wilson issued a joint open letter to the commissioner, expressing their view that a brand-new arena may not be necessary.
Instead, they advocated for substantial upgrades to the existing Moda Center, arguing that thoughtful renovations could extend the life of the venue and address any concerns, potentially avoiding the financial and logistical complexities of constructing an entirely new facility.
